The State of Michigan is putting small pig farmers out of business by defining their heritage hogs as an “invasive species of wild boar.” The state claims the pigs are escaping and wreaking havoc on wildlife and other farms and must be destroyed. In this podcast, Brad talks with Mark Baker, one of the heritage hog farmers who is now forced to slaughter his own pigs and give away their meat for free. Baker explains that the only threat his pigs pose is to the conventional, confinement pork farmers, and it’s not because they’re breaking out of their pens. Rather, it’s because Baker’s pork is darker in color, richer in flavor and more desirable to consumers looking for healthy, humanely raised meat, and the pork industry is not interested in that kind of competition.
